Abstract

Road infrastructure development and the increasing number of vehicles on the roads are factors which can significantly disrupt the migration of large animals. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of road collision involving animals. The analysis of road incidents involving large animals (wild boar, roe deer and deer) and the migration of animals covered three winter months: December, January and February. The study consisted of a comparison of data obtained from the Provincial Police Headquarters in Poznań and the results obtained from television monitoring on the fauna overpass in the National Park of Wielkopolska on road no 5. Over five years, the largest number of road incidents involving animals was between 16.00 and 19.59. It constituted 36.37% of incidents, within the measured time periods. As a result of the analysis conducted, the greatest frequency of the migration of large animals on the fauna overpass during the three months researched was also reported at dusk, between 16.00 and 19.59. This constituted 33.9% of migrating animals on the fauna overpass in the analysed periods of time. As a result of the research, information was obtained, which may be useful in activities to increase safety in road traffic (e.g. training for drivers).
