Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) restitution in the Sudety Mountains – the characteristics of restored trees

Władysław Barzdajn, Wojciech Kowalkowski

The aim of the program of silver fir restitution in the Sudety Mountains is to reestablish the local populations of this tree species. The existing seed base of silver fir in this region is vestigial, therefore the basis of the program is the establishment of seed orchards of this species. These will be managed in a similar way to the seed orchards established as the progeny of mother trees. This paper presents the results of the reestablishment of fir usinng selected silver fir trees in the Sudety Mountains (1587 trees were selected). The next step, after selection of the material, was to establish 9 seed orchards which should be the seed base for the program.
