Green density of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) sapwood coming from selected stands north-western Poland
Abstract
The first of the aims of this study was to analyze the density of sapwood parts of the cross section of the trunk of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The second to determine the relationship between wood density and selected morphological traits of trees. The research material was collected from seven pine stands from the northern part of the Poland (RDSF Szczecinek). In each stand sample plots were established, in which characteristics of all growing trees, i.e. height [m] and diameter breast height On the basis of these data was selected after 9 tree model from any surface, in total 63. After felling stems of model trees were divided into sections. Means for sections were determined at a distance of 1.3 m from stem base and at points corresponding to 20, 40, 60 and 80% stem length. The analyzes included only two samples from sapwood. Green density of pine sapwood was 754 kg/m3. In the longitudinal cross section the highest green density characterized samples from DBH (816 kg/m3), the lowest samples from the section closest to the top (707 kg/m3). With increasing distance from the base of the trunk wood specific gravity decreased. In the bottom half of the trunk were very dynamic changes in the apical part of the variation was small, statistically insignificant. At the level of the three sections (I, II and IV) density correlated with the height of the tree. At the level of section IV density also correlated with the diameter at breast height (0.26) and stem volume in bark (0.26). In the case of section V of wood density was correlated with the diameter at breast height (-0.29), stem volume in bark (-0.29) and the length of the crown (-0.27). At the level section III relationships between wood density and morphological features of trees not found.
