Abstract

Provenance trials are a basic experimental method to deliver knowledge concerning the growth and development of the progeny of different tree species populations in different climate and soil conditions. The aim of the paper was to: 1) find out if different beech provenances (growing on an experimental plot in the Forest District Śnieżka) impact basic features of growing trees, e.g. dbh and height and, 2) find out which beech provenances were best adapted to suit local site conditions. T he experiment was established in 1967, using a completely randomized block design in 6 replications. Each of the 7-th provenances was  represented by 720 plants, 120 per plot. Measurements were conducted every 10-th year and tree heights and dbh were measured. The average values for each replication were taken for further calculations. Currently, the provenances best adapted to the local site conditions were from Rozołdy and Klimontów. However, the obtained results do not give an unequivocal answer as to which beech provenances may be cultivated in the site conditions of the experimental plot.
