Pine tree crown length in stands of three age classes

Katarzyna Kaźmierczak

Abstract

The paper presents the results of the analysis of crown length. Empirical material was collected on three experimental clear-cutting areas including a total  1050 pine trees. The relationship between pine crown length and stem measurements and measurements of the growth space of a single tree was analyzed. The following was measured for each tree: diameter at breast height, height, height of base of live crown, commercial volume and volume increment. The following measures of the growth space of a single tree were adopted: crown projection area – pk, crown width – dk, Seebach’s growth space number – dk /d1,3, crown projection area to basal area ratio – dk2/d1,32 , crown spread – dk/h, space of a single tree – ppd. The biosocial position was set for each tree using Kraft’s classification criteria. The crown length of each tree was calculated as the difference between the tree height and the height of the base of the live crown. Based on the research, the following was found:
1. The size of crown length depends on the stand age and on the tree’s biosocial position.
2. The crown length increases with each tree characteristic; in the case of the biosocial position of a tree, the opposite tendency was observed – a decrease with the deterioration of the tree position in the stand.
3. The crown ratio shows the highest dependence on crown length.
4. The characteristics describing the growth space of a single tree are correlated with crown length. Seebach’s growth space number and crown projection area to basal area ratio do not show a statistically significant dependence on the crown length in the two younger stands.
